art gifts

December 25, 2011

happy holidays! i decided that sitting at home on christmas with a cold would be an excellent time to update my blog, so here goes.

this year i had the time (and foresight!) to create a few holiday gifts without the claws of wal-mart getting a slice (aaron brothers framing perhaps, but not wal-mart).

starting out with some technical pen drawings (my four thin tech pens were frustratingly clogged, forcing me to use the thick one).

then a few prismacolor drawings (two on black paper, two traditional ones on white paper).

and how about some crafty wreaths? these look simple but were ridiculously time-consuming. handmade from dried sweetgum spiky things gathered from our local park, then spray painted, “lollipopped” and then jammed into a wreath form, then garnished with foam berries.

amusements for the office

September 1, 2011

so, as my loyal readership (::cough cough.. two people::) may have surmised, i haven’t been up to much lately, art-wise. reason being, i now have a full-time job that keeps me out of the house for roughly 11-12 hours each day!  my free time in the evenings is frequently spent crocheting in a dull haze while the t.v. flashes in the background. other artistic pursuits languish on the dust-ridden drafting table.

aiming to bring some color to my otherwise completely grey, 8’x8′ windowless cubicle, i’ve started adorning it, bit by bit. framed & matted photos on two walls. croton plant in a corner. jellyfish dangling from the inbox. cactus garden to hide the dvd burner.

the wee hamburger is a mini replica of in-n-out’s famed double-double, made for a friend residing in a country without the joys of in-n-out.

side note: I was inspired to make the cactus gardens after my bf kept killing the real plants i provided for his office. some of the cactus inspiration can be credited to planetjune, however i just eyeballed her lovely creations and made do without a pattern.

nyan cat

July 4, 2011

inspired by this viral video, i created a costume for stormy out of felt & fabric for his upcoming 5th birthday (july 13th). nyannyannyannyannyan…!!

and here is a video of the birthday boy being extremely annoyed. heehee!

so back in september i had an idea to make drawings/paintings of awesome animals dining at some of L.A.’s hottest eateries. this is what i have so far…

a slow loris showing the viewer his chili dog from pink’s:

and a giant tarsier about to gobble a taco from tito’s tacos:

because we all know, “the only thing better than a tito’s taco…. is two!”

on thursday, this was just an ordinary wooden side table, sitting on top of some other neglected furniture at my local salvation army. one coat of primer, several coats of black paint, gold painted trim, faux malachite finish and about 12 hours of tedious work have transformed it into a delightfully tacky octagonal original.

where is the love?

February 13, 2011

handmade valentines have been a tradition of mine since college. this year i opted to go with recycled materials (cardboard, fabric scraps, paper stencils and paint) to make 27 valentines virtually for free. my cat, stormy, seemed to enjoy them.

i also crocheted an octopus with bendy arms to hold pens and pencils for MY valentine. as much as i’d like to take credit for this idea, it was actually rachel’s brainchild.

i received a very specific request from a friend to do a painting/drawing of a squid fighting a whale. because my tech pens were being annoying, i decided to take the quick route and paint this one in watercolor. to my knowledge, giant squid don’t grow to be as large as a blue whale, but just let me dream, ok?

this is eerily reminiscent of my homemade squid costume from halloween 2007..

so, folks, it’s 2011 already, and for this occasion i have made eleven resolutions, ten of which are none of your business. the eleventh resolution is to make one piece of art (a painting, collage, sculpture or even a doodle) every week. so far, i’m a little behind, due to my 10-year old technical pens getting clogged and gross. so, after disassembling and cleaning the stupid pen about four times, i present to you – an angry bear!

more updates to come in 2011, i promise.

dinosaur lullaby

November 24, 2010

this piece ended up disappointing me; although i like the dinosaur, i am not feeling the rest. it’s quite a large piece (15” x 48”) so i thought i’d post it anyway for some variety.

cat art rises in popularity

September 21, 2010

thanks in part to this blog, i have completed a couple of commission projects – a cat triptych (much like the one done of my own cat) and a cross-hatching portrait. yay!
